A white iron candle lantern, 23cm tall and 19.5cm across, with decorative openwork cut through the body and a handle over the top. It works indoors and on a covered terrace.
The openwork is the point. A solid lantern contains the light; a pierced one projects it, so the pattern cut into the metal is thrown across the table, wall or floor around it once the candle is lit. That is the whole visual payoff of this kind of piece, and it only appears after dark — which is worth knowing before judging it in daylight.
White is the less obvious finish and the better one in a pale room. Black lanterns read as heavy objects in daylight and only come alive at night; white ones stay light on a table or shelf when unlit, which is most of the time. The handle means it can be hung from a hook as easily as it stands.
